The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2009 will be held from November 28th to December 5th at Phuket’s beautiful Kata Beach. This is one of yachting’s top events, regionally and internationally and highlights Phuket’s marine lifestyle and the fact that Phuket is a great sporting destination. The seven day event is expected to attract 2,000 tourists to the area and will generate much needed tourism income.

First launched in 1987 to celebrate His Majesty the King’s birthday, the regatta is always held during the first week of December. Each year, the week-long event has been a great success and has dawn much international media attention.

Mr. Kevin Whitcraft, President of the regatta’s organizing committee said, “This event represents Phuket’s natural beauty in terms of a yachting and tourism destination. The event is broadcast to over 150 million homes worldwide as well.”

Holding the event at the start of high season not only attracts yachting enthusiasts who come to witness the race, but it encourages  them to stay in the country longer and boosts the local economy.

The 23rd regatta will begin on November 28th with a practice race and skipper’s briefing, followed by the opening ceremony the next day. Those who attend can expect to see competitors from Australia, the UK, China, Russia and many other countries.

The regatta is organized by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the sponsorship of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Phuket Province.
