There has been an increase in drug arrests from last year for the period of October 31, 2008 to September 30, 2009. 599,343 yaba tablets were seized during this period, according to Chonburi Governmor Senee Chittakasem. These represent an increase of 2,865 drug related cases; an increase of 2,869 people charged and an increase of 267,615 seized yaba tablets.

At a press conference regarding ‘the Chonburi Annual Operation Report to the Public,’ the Governor explained that this represents a dramatic  increase compared to last year. There were 16,837 drug related arrests, involving 17,131 suspects. Of these, 334 were alleged dealers. Ten suspects were arrested for producing drugs, while the rest were nabbed for buying or using the illicit substances.

Governor Chittakasem said that part of the Chonburi Major Agenda, for next year, will be for every district and sub police station to successfully complete a drug case every month and to more effectively crack down on the area’s illicit drug activities. In addition, the Chonburi Administrative Organization was recently directed to provide three units of the narcotic detection machine, ‘Alpha 6,’ to local police.
