The world’s longest-serving monarch, HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej,of Thailand, was admitted to the hospital for a lung infection, fever, fatigue and loss of appetite on September 19.

King Bhumibol is revered by all Thais and as his condition deteriorated, the stock market seemed to tumble as well.

It was reported that during the first week after he was admitted to hospital, there was a 2.04% drop in the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET).

A physician at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, explained that the King was admitted with a fever which weakened him. However, since he was admitted, the lung infection has subsided and his fever has gone down as well. Initially, he had to be fed via tubes but can now take his meals normally.

The doctor added, “Even though his lung infection has improved it will still be a while before he is fully recovered, which is normal for people of his age.” The King is presently 81 years old.

Princess Chulabhorn recently reported on the King’s condition in a broadcast from Berlin which was shown in Thailand.

“The King is being given therapy to help him walk and stand normally again because His Majesty has been lying on the hospital bed for so long. That is the reason His Majesty is still in the hospital but there is no danger
at all. So citizens do not need to worry,” said Princess Chulabhorn.

Her statement was the first public comment from a member of the Royal Family. She was on a trip to Germany to accept a medal for her work in the field of science.

As His Majesty’s condition improved, so did the stock market which has rebounded by 3.52%. It is apparent that the King plays an important role in maintaining Thailand’s stability in every respect.

Thousands of visitors from around the world, including a member of the British Royal Family, have visited Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok to pay their respects to His Majesty the King and to sign the book for well-wishers.
