Asian’s first ever local government school is to be upgraded to international standards, aimed at helping local kids to have a chance to study an international curriculum.

Phothisamphan Phittaya School on Naklua road is one of four schools in Thailand, including schools in Phuket, Chaing Mai and Bangkok, that the Ministry of Education has given the green light to use the international standard curriculum for their students at affordable tuition. This is in order to compete with other international schools based in Thailand and Asia.

The Phothisamphan Principal, Mr. Prasit Thonglueng, said, “This is a big honor for our school to have been selected by the Ministry of Education for the Eastern Seaboard to start this project aimed at providing the kids with quality education. Most of the students can’t afford to attend international schools because the school admission, uniforms and additional fees are too expensive.”

Phothisamphan Phittayakhan was the first school in Banglamung district to have added secondary education back in 1960 and was operated by five teachers.

“The school has more than 2,500 students and over 120 teachers now. The traditional education’s curriculum will be in English next year. The only two levels that need to take a test are secondary and high school. Each class will be limited to 30 students. The school management is now working on preparing all necessary educational essential components and equipment and expects to be ready for student in 2010. This program is open to all nationalities,” continued Mr. Prasit.
